Links
Here are collected some links referring to research groups involved in
the determination of mid-infrared optical constants of different types of aerosols, such as
- supercooled binary and ternary solution droplets composed of sulphuric acid, nitric acid,
and water
- NAD ( = nitric acid dihydrate)
- NAT ( = nitric acid trihydrate)
- water ice
- supercooled water droplets

Dr. Alexander Zasetsky
Contains the desription of an iterative procedure to retrieve optical constants from aerosol
extinction spectra. The algorithm was applied to derive temperature-dependent complex refractive
indices of ice and supercooled water.
-
Optical Properties of Aerosols - a laboratory and modelling study
Contains a new data set of temperature and composition-dependent optical constants
for aqueous sulphuric acid (published in 2003). Ongoing work focusses on the temperature-dependent
complex refractive index of supercooled binary HNO3/H2O and ternary
H2SO4/HNO3/H2O aerosols.
-
Margaret Tolbert research group
Here you can download the first dat set of low-temperature mid-infrared complex refractive indices of aqueous
sulfuric acid. Additionally, temperature-dependent optical constants of water ice in the near infrared are available.
-
The Atmospheric Chemistry research group of IACETH
Offers a refractive index calculator to estimate the refractive indices of
H2SO4/HNO3/H2O solutions to stratospheric temperatures.
-
DePaul University - Department of Chemistry - Richard F. Niedziela
Determination of mid-IR real and imaginary complex refractive indices of organic compounds.
An optical constant data base, listing the known complex refractive index data sets for a number of compounds,
is under construction.
-
The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) Spectroscopy Group
Within the project "Mapping of Polar Stratospheric Clouds and Ozone levels Relevant to the Region of Europe (MAPSCORE)",
a database of refractive indices for relevant aerosols was compiled.
-
Astrophysical Institute & University Observatory Jena
Contains an extensive database of optical constants for silicates, oxides, sulfides,
and carbon.
From the web page of
V. Ossenkopf
you can download a program for the derivation of optical constants from transmission spectra
of samples with inclusions of separated small spherical particles.
-
Research Group "Heterogeneous Reactions" of ICG II, Research Centre Jülich
Studies in an aerosol flow tube in which optical spectra
(presently IR) and size distributions can be measured at the same time.
This allows for the determination of optical constants of aerosols as
function of their chemical composition by means of Mie calculations.
-
Prof. P. Chylek, Dalhousie University, Halifax
Have e.g. measured for the first time the absorption coefficient of supercooled water
in the 0.65 to 2.5 mm spectral range.
-
HITRAN2004 database
Link to the HITRAN2004 molecular spectroscopic database. The pdf-file
Aerosol-Readme.pdf lists the aerosol indices of refraction included in HITRAN.
